Overviewย

Dating from the early-to-mid 19th century (circa 1810โ€“1830), this pair of heavy, decorative candle holders is crafted from gilded bronze (ormolu). The design belongs to the French Empire and Restoration periods, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity. Objects of this style were popular among the wealthy European elite, often gracing formal dining tables, fireplace mantels, or credenzas to display symmetrical grandeur.

Features

  • Lion's Paw Tripod Feet: The lower base is supported by detailed, cast-bronze animalistic claw feet. This classic motif is highly characteristic of the Empire style and adds an majestic architectural foundation to each stick.ย
  • Fluted Neoclassical Columns: The main shaft features a tapered, fluted column structure resembling ancient Greek architecture. It seamlessly connects the base to the upper socket, adorned at both ends with molded foliage.ย
  • Concave Hexagonal/Tri-Wing Base: Rather than resting on a flat, plain square, the structural base arches inward along three main curves to follow the profile of the tripod paws, resulting in a striking, curved geometry.
